Corbels and Viga Tails FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Some of the most distinctive features of Southwestern homes are the viga tails on the exterior of the building. Traditional adobe architecture used tree trunks, called vigas, as beams to support the roof. The ends of the vigas, known as viga tails, stick out through the exterior of the building. Today any home can easily incorporate viga tails for the distinctive Southwestern design style.
-
Vigas can be installed using either a mechanical fastener, such as a threaded rod, or with adhesive. If using adhesive the viga tail will need to be nailed in place while the adhesive dries (about 24 hours). See our installation instructions under resources for details on how to install a replacement viga tail.

A decorative corbel is an architectural element that is used to provide a unique and eye-catching detail to a home or building. Corbels usually feature ornamental detailing like swirls, scrolls, carvings, or exaggerated shapes that make it stand out from the rest of the wall or structure. Faux wood corbels from AZ Faux add character and dimension to any space!

Corbels from AZ Faux are designed to be installed on both the exterior and interior of a structure. Our corbels are made using all-weather, high-density polyurethane so they are built to last and will look great no matter where you choose to install them.
-
Corbels from AZ Faux are made of molded high-density polyurethane. They are hollow on the inside which makes them extremely lightweight and installation very easy. To install, cut a piece of lumber (typically a 2x4) that will fit inside the cavity of the corbel. Mount the lumber at the desired location by using desk screws and screwing it into the underlying studs. Slide the corbel over the mounting block and secure the corbel by running with deck screws through the side of the corbel and into the mounting block. Slightly countersink the screws then conceal the screw head with caulk or wood putty. Use paint from the touch-up kit (for factory-finished products) to complete the job.
