Tips for a Balanced Home Exterior Design
As you plan your home exterior design with faux or natural wood beams and wall panels, a few key choices can help you create a balanced, intentional look. From placement to scale and color, these details can make a big difference in the finished design.
Placement
Thoughtful placement can help beams and wall panels enhance your home’s architecture rather than compete with it.
Consider using beams to highlight existing architectural features such as gables, covered porches, entryways, rooflines, and outdoor living spaces. Placing beams where they naturally complement the structure of your home can create a more cohesive, intentional look.
For larger exterior spaces, multiple beams can add dimension and visual interest, while adding fewer beams may work better on smaller areas or homes with simpler architectural details. Use our beam visualizer to find the perfect placement for your room.
Wall panels can also be used to draw attention to specific areas, such as an entryway, foundation, accent wall, or outdoor gathering space. Keeping the placement balanced with the rest of the exterior helps the finished design feel connected rather than overwhelming.
If you decide to use faux wall panels, be mindful of placement near heat sources such as fireplaces. Always allow proper clearance for safety and performance.
Configuration
There are various kitchen beam ideas based on the area size and ceiling height. The higher your ceiling, the more wiggle room you have to be creative. High ceilings give you more room to get creative with your beam design. Not sure where to start? Give our team a call — we're happy to help bring your vision to life.

Size & Shape
The size and shape of your beams should complement the scale and proportions of your home.
Larger, more substantial beams work well on expansive exteriors, wide gables, and covered outdoor spaces where they can create a strong architectural statement. For smaller areas, slimmer beams can add character without overpowering the surrounding features.
Shape also plays a role in the overall look. Choosing beam dimensions and profiles that complement your home’s existing architectural details can help create a balanced, cohesive exterior design.
Color & Finish
Color and finish can help your beams and faux wall panels blend seamlessly with your home’s exterior or stand out as a contrasting design feature.
Natural wood tones can add warmth and texture, while darker or lighter finishes can create contrast against siding, stone, brick, or stucco. Consider the existing colors of your trim, roofing, doors, and other exterior details when choosing a finish to help the overall design feel cohesive.
The good news is that our natural wood beams, faux wood beams, and wall panels give you plenty of creative control over the final design. You can even order your beams unfinished, allowing you to paint or stain them to achieve the exact finish you want.

Our faux products can be cut with any standard wood cutting tool. For faux beam product we recommend using a hand saw, rather that power tools, due to the presence of embeded screws.
-
Yes. Our natural and faux wood beams, as well as select faux wall and siding panels, can be used for exterior applications.
Faux products are moisture resistant and designed to hold up in outdoor conditions, making them a great option for adding architectural detail to porches, gables, entryways, exterior walls, and other outdoor spaces. Always review the installation instructions and product specifications for your specific application before installing.
-
Yes. AZ Faux products are designed for both indoor and outdoor applications. Painted products use Sherwin-Williams coatings that contain UV inhibitors to help protect the finish from sun exposure. For exterior installations, an additional UV-protective topcoat is recommended for enhanced durability.
To help maintain the appearance of your faux beams, panels, and other exterior products over time, AZ Faux recommends reapplying a UV-protective topcoat every 3–5 years, depending on the level of sun exposure. A factory-applied UV topcoat may also be available for an additional charge.

Faux wood beams can add architectural interest to many areas of your home’s exterior. Use them to accent gables, covered porches, rooflines, entryways, columns, and outdoor living spaces. They can also help frame a front door or highlight other features you want to draw attention to.
Because they work with many styles of house exteriors, faux beams can be used to add anything from rustic character to a cleaner, more modern architectural detail.
-
Yes. AZ Faux offers several options for adding the look of stone or brick outdoors. Faux wall panels made from high-density polyurethane can be installed indoors or outdoors, while exterior siding panels are specifically designed for exterior applications and install similarly to traditional vinyl siding.
They’re a great option for adding texture to foundations, accent walls, entryways, porches, and other areas without the weight and complexity of traditional stone or brick.
-
Yes, but your finishing options depend on the product. Natural wood beams can be ordered unfinished and painted or stained to complement your home’s existing paint color and exterior palette.
Unfinished faux wood beams can also be customized, but AZ Faux recommends using a quality water-based acrylic paint rather than wood stain, oil-based paint, or solvent-based products. Faux stone and brick panels can also be repainted with an appropriate water-based paint if you want to refresh or customize their appearance.
For exterior applications, always follow the finishing and care instructions for your specific product to help protect its appearance over time.
